Stormcaller v Elevation Pale Ale

  • Beer: Elevation Pale Ale
  • Brewery: Wicklow Wolf
  • Style: Pale Ale
  • Strength: 4.8%

Not much of the wolf about this, more of a rabbit it’s so hoppy, and that is no bad thing. The flavour is vibrant, and bracing. It tastes like the cold, dew heavy air on a morning in the Lake District, and evokes a sense of isolated loneliness of a solitary walker… or wolf.

  • Book: The Stormcaller

I don’t see this book recommended often which I think is a big shame (I wonder if it had an American release?). I read The Stormcaller when it came out and re-read it last year. I loved it both times.

Despite its length it is far from a slow read, and doesn’t rely on constant fight scenes for its pace which is refreshing. We follow Isak as he comes to terms with his new role as the god-chosen heir to Lord Bahl, ruler of the Fahlan. Like Lord Bahl, Isak is a white eye. Genetic freaks, white eyes are bigger, stronger and more savage than other people. In essence they are your traditional roid-heads. They can also do magic…

What ensues is the tale of Isak having to learn to navigate the worlds of politics and war at an almost break-neck pace. Vengeful and petty gods mucking about in mortal affairs; brutality, backstabbing political intrigue ultimately resulting in war and bloodshed; prophecies in abundance and the resulting attempts to fulfil or foil them. It’s like an Abercrombie or GRRM book with the magical elements ramped up by 1000.
